The Nike+ Fuelband SE

The new Nike+ Fuelband SE is available in the Netherlands since today, and #FITGIRLCODE will be testing these awesome babies! The Nike+ Fuelband gives you insight into your daily activities and the effects of them. I have only been wearing one for a couple of hours now, and I am absolutely in love with it! 

The Nike+ Fuelband measures all your daily activities, from walking to running to dancing at your favorite club – name it and it is measured. And it does not only track how much you move, but also the intensity of it and how often you do it. You can even set a reminder that if you sit still for a while, your Nike+ fuelband will remind you to move again! It is like having your BFFF sitting next to you, encouraging you to stay fit and cheering you on when you engage in an activity. When I started hysterically dancing around to test it, it displayed “GO SHELLEY” – how awesome is that?!

You can connect your Nike+ fuelband with your computer and your smartphone, keeping you up to date about your progress and activities. Your fuelband itself displays your Nike fuelpoints, hours won in a day, burned calories, steps taken and the time of the day. You can set a goal regarding your fuelpoints and your new BFFF will display how far along you are in reaching your goal.

#FITGIRLCODE will be testing out this cool gadget over the coming weeks, so we’ll let you know whether it is a good addition to your work out experience. My friends are probably going to be driven completely insane by me shouting how many fuelpoints I have every 5 minutes, but ah well, a (Fit) Girl has got to make sacrifices. 😉


Chase summer!

We at #FITGIRLCODE are eagerly chasing summer! Summer means that the weather is nice, the birds are singing and everybody is happy. Summer is also the time in which you can exercise outside and at the same time enjoy the weather. We Fit Girls love to go running outside in this beautiful season. Plus, they say that running is one of the easiest ways to get a tan ;).

Your playground is outside
One of the best things about running is that you can decide for yourself when and where you want to do your work out. You can just go outside and start to run: your playground is outside. Besides, during your run outdoor you can check the most beautiful views such as a beautiful sunset or sundown. And you don’t have to take into consideration the times that you are able to join certain hours at the gym. Plus, you get to decide your own training schedule; a schedule that will suit you perfectly. Convinced yet? 😉


But what is the best time during the day to go for a run or to do other work outs outside? It basically doesn’t really matter. Some people like to go for a run in the morning, because it gives them a lot of energy and they feel more prepared for a long and hard day of work/school. It will get them started. Running outside can give you just the energy that is needed, especially when it’s as light in the morning as in the summer. However, others love to run in the evening after a long day of work to relax and get their minds straight in order to sleep better at night. Eventually, your body will get used to running at a particular time. A bonus is that you’re working out outside which will give you a lot of vitamin D and this makes you even more healthy!

1. @2sisters_angie

This is an Instagram account of a mother and her daughter, Mayhem. Together, they make an outfit of paper almost everyday. The outfits look really cute and are often inspired by famous figures. Moreover, the outfits are fun to watch and the mother describes some of the pictures hilariously. Follow this account for your daily dosis of cuteness and awesomeness. And pssst, they also have a blog ;).

I recently found out about this Instagram account. It’s the account of a Norwegian girl who loves to draw on mirrors. Say what?! Yes, drawing on mirrors. She draws funny stuff on mirrors and then positions herself in this drawing which results into awesome images.

Robyn Lawley is known as one of the most famous plus-size models. She’s posting a lot of pictures of her new swimwear collection that I absolutely adore. I really love the fact that they are using plus-size models (I don’t believe they’re plus-size of course, but it’s what it’s being called). The account shows inspirational pictures that show the different sizes of a woman’s body shape and I absolutely adore Robyn’s shape!

Looking for some color in your life? This Instagram account gives me that dreamy feeling. This girl loves pineapples, the beach, and many bright colors. If you follow her, you will definitely get a summery feeling everyday she is on your timeline of your Instagram account.

How to handle those love handles

We all need some love in our lives. But sometimes, we feel like that we got too much love to share. With this I mean, love handles. Nothing wrong with those cuties of course, but some girls can be quite insecure about them. 

The basic ingredients for a healthy body are eating healthy and exercising. Most of the times, love handles come into existence when fat is restored, that is, when you eat more than you’ve moved during the day. It is therefore always important to drink a lot of water, to exercise, to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, and to not stress.

However, there are also some exercises that help you get rid of your love handles and to train your stomach area. I have selected 3 exercises that seemed the most fun.

1. The Spiderman (sounds awesome already right?)

Start in an elbow plank. (see image below what I mean by that). Then draw one knee (just as in the image) to the outside shoulder. Return your knee to the elbow plank position and repeat with the other side.

2. Side plank

Move to your side and lean on your elbow while only letting your feet, elbow and underarm touch the ground. Move your other arm underneath your upper part of your body and after this, move it up to ‘touch’ the ceiling. Repeat this exercise on the other side as well.

3. Basic bicycle

Lay on your back and put your hands behind your ears. Now bring each knee to the opposite elbow (like riding a bicycle) without putting your feet on the ground . Your right knee will touch your left elbow and the other way around. You can do this as many times as you want, but don’t hurt yourself. Listen to your body.

Always remember, don’t worry too much about those love handles. Your perfect just the way you are. And who doesn’t need some extra love in their lives? See those lovely handles as a way to spread the love. And just in case you really want to do something about it, try out these exercises and eat healthy!

In Love With Health, how it all started…

When I couldn’t get myself of the couch once again, I decided to change my life completely! I was done with my lazy and lifeless lifestyle of hardly doing any work outs (terrible…I know) and eating whatever passed me by all day long. I learned the hard way: it’s easier saying this than actually doing it.

Unfortunately, it took a lot of effort. When my boyfriend made one of his delicious pasta recipes with cream sauce and was eating it with so much joy on his face, I was kind of bummed out that I had to eat my salad with chicken. It honestly took me a lot of effort to not eat his food! But only after 1 month, this healthy life has turned into my lifestyle without a lot of struggles. That pasta with creamy sauce doesn’t hurt me anymore and that bag of fries? Nah.. Just give me my Quinoa salad or a delicious vegetable/fruit smoothie. (Allright, I’m not completely honest right now, I still eat chocolate cake or a nice sandwich with Nutella! Ssst..)

The most important changes when I changed my lifestyle were that I got healthier, fitter and was full of energy! A glorious feeling!  In the past, I’ve been avoiding gyms for so many years, but I now find it wonderful to work out three or four times a week. Who would’ve ever thought that I would do this?! Another plus is that I not only changed on the inside, but also on the outside (Read: the days of love-handles are as good as over).

This touch give the clothes a feminine look. Personally, I like this collection, because I like the fact that you can combine elements of sports clothes with a casual outfit. That’s why I wanted to show you this collection of Adidas with only six items.




In their new line Adidas has incorporated a crop top with their logo in an orchid print.I think you can combine this shirt perfectly with a high-waisted jeans. This will make it absolutely fashionable.







I am a fan of shorts and especially shorts that have a special print on them. This item is my favorite item of the Originals Orchid Collection.







I think this is the best example of the Adidas Originals Orchid Collection in which a sporty item has been made into something feminine without it being girly. This top still looks tough.







Wouldn’t this jacket look awesome if you combine it with a black skinny jeans, some high heels (or fashionable sneakers), a white t-shirt, and a subtle necklace? I think it would look awesome!






I don’t know why this is is the case, but I just don’t like this t-shirt. It’s kind of weird because I like the tank top. Maybe this is a little bit too much for me? Or maybe I’m just not a big fan of this type of t-shirt.






This is the last item of the Orginals Orchid Collection and I love it! I am a huge fan of pants with prints on it and I possess many of them. This pants would be a perfect contribution to my wardrobe.

Why too much is never a good idea

I’d be the first one to encourage you to keep up a healthy lifestyle. Really, fruit is oh-so good for you, exercising makes you happy and I’m proud of you for taking nuts as a snack instead of potato chips. But there’s a limit to everything – too much is never a good idea, of anything. There’s no such thing as too healthy, but there can be too much fruit, too much exercising and too much nuts.  

Ever since I read this article from Jelmer de Boer (sorry international Fit Girls, it’s in Dutch) I have been thinking about writing this blog. Jelmer argues that it’s ridiculous that people put 14 different kinds of fruit in their oatmeal in the morning and wants us to sober up our bowl of oatmeal. And to be honest, I kinda agree. Of course you should do with your oatmeal what you want, but sometimes I feel it’s just getting out of hand. Now, we offer you a lot of inspiration with our blogs to vary your oatmeal, but too much of anything is never good!

We all know that avocado’s are small pieces of heaven sent to us from above, and I delight in them regularly, but that doesn’t mean I should eat them all day long. Yes, they are healthy, but too much of it leads you to take in too much fat through your food. The same goes for nuts; I love to eat a handful of almonds every once in a while, but them being healthy doesn’t give me a free pass to snack on them all day long. In 50g of almonds, there are 300 calories, 10g of protein, 5g carbs, and 26g of fatties. Are they healthy? Hell yeah! But that doesn’t mean you can eat a limitless amount of them and still expect to be healthy or lose weight.

Anna already mentioned in her article that too much exercising isn’t good as well. Your body needs some time to repair and needs the rest, instead of continuous exercising. Too much of it will only strain your muscles and result in injuries. My point is: too much of anything is never a good idea. So, lovely Fit Girls, add some variation to your life and food! You’re on the right track eating so healthy and exercising regularly, but don’t forget to spice up your routine every once in a while. I’m sure you can think of a better healthy snack than all those nuts and apples every day 😉 And if you do have any tips, be sure to share them with us too. We’re always learning!

Music your heart out! Why music helps you in your work out

Working out all by yourself can sometimes be a little frustrating and boring. However, there can be a solution for this problem: music! Most of the times, good music will help you through these tough hours of working out. But why is this the case? 5 reasons why music improves your work out.

1. Distraction. When fatigue is setting in, music will distract you from this. It basically makes a work out seem more like fun and it helps the mind to make sense of symptoms of fatigue.

2. Attainment of flow. This kind of sounds difficult, but it is actually rather simple. Music can affect your motivational state by means of lyrics or timbre of the song. The lyrics of a song provide a certain narrative and this narrative has certain connotations embedded in them. This means that powerful lyrics can empower you in your work out.

3. Coordination. Your coordinating movements can improve by listening to music during your work out.

4. Work out music helps you in a self-paced exercise such as running. Recent research has found out that people who were cycling on music that matched their pace had more endurance than people who were cycling without music.

5. Music can alter your emotional and psychological state as well. Music can be used to get you started to work out or to calm down.

Dreaming about my bucket list

I had never really thought about a bucket list before reading the lists of Nathalie, Shelley and Anna. It got me dreaming about my bucket list and ended up with a list that made me dream and smile. I didn’t have the intention of posting it when I wrote it, and I feel the list is quite personal. I decided to share it anyways because I shouldn’t be ashamed of my dreams! How to choose your carbs

Carbohydrates. Healthy or unhealthy? There are a lot of diets that tell you carbohydrates are your enemy. Can you live without them? They give you great energy and can be found in almost every product. #FITGIRLCODE fan Ffion asked us which carbs to avoid.

What are Carbohydrates? Carbs (Carbohydrates) are an important source of energy and fibers. Like fuel for your body because your body turns them into glucose also known as sugar. You mostly can find them in bread, pasta, vegetables peas, beans, fruits and rice but they are also to be found in cookies, sodas and other sugary foods. Carbs are everywhere, even in cucumber! But which ones should you avoid?

How to choose your Carbs

Avoid the fake. There are natural sugars and there are sugars that are processed. Processed sugars are the bad carbs. They give you a higher blood sugar level in a short time. This is because they are low in fiber and your body processes them too fast. They cause high spikes in your blood sugar levels (in high amount also known as sugar rush) and are high in calorie but not very nutritious. These are to be found in soda’s, candy bars, cookies but also that little teaspoon of sugar in your coffee. Also considered as bad carbs are pasta and bread.

Say yes to “naturelle”
. Natural carbs are to be found in peas, beans, quinoa, bulgur oats, rice, nuts, vegetables, fruits and more. They are high in fiber and your body processes them slowly which avoid spikes in blood sugar levels. Before training, to get a natural energy boost it is recommended to have a banana, dates or grapes because they are high of sugars. But don’t overdo it! Even though they are super nutritious, you can never eat unlimited sugars just because they are natural.


Listen to your body and try to figure out what’s best for you. What is your goal? Do you want to gain muscles? Do you want to prevent your body having sugar peaks and lows? One thing is sure: be careful with added sugars. Those are the ones you really should avoid. It is not true that you are not allowed to eat bread of pasta every once in a while. Just choose the ones with the whole grains because the more of fibers they contain. Modify your intake. The balance of how to manage your carb intake is very diverse and personal. I mean, look at the French,together with some other countries, they have been named the healthiest people in the world and  they don’t hesitate to eat croissants or baguettes with Nutella. It’s all about portions. Experiment, and figure out what’s best for you.

6 rules of the gym etiquette

We’ve all been there, that moment when you’re at the gym and you are so incredibly annoyed by some things other people do. Maybe you are the annoyed, or perhaps you are the annoyer… The point is, there is a certain set of unwritten rules that you should follow at the gym. After all, you are not the only one working your butt off there, so let’s make it a little bit easier for each other! Here are 6 rules of the gym etiquette. 

1. Use deodorant

Really, use some deodorant. Of course, your sweat “is a sexy glow” and “it is your fat crying”, but it doesn’t smell so good. Nothing to worry about when you’re by yourself, but it’s not so nice to the person next to you. Deodorant won’t get rid of all the odors but it masks the funkiest smells!

2. Wipe off the equipment you used

When we’re still on the subject of sweating, please wipe off the equipment you used. There’s nothing more disgusting than lying in someone else’s sweat. Even if you don’t think you sweat that much, you still leave your mark behind. And it’s not that much effort to swipe that towel back and forth for 5 seconds right?

3. Don’t stare!

This goes for everyone: guys to girls, girls to girls, girls to guys, guys to guys… Seriously, don’t stare. It’s awkward. People are there working their bodies, so if you’re staring at them, they will either think you are creepy and might jump them in the locker room or that you are ridiculing them. Even if a girl is wearing only a sports bra and is exposing her tummy, she’s not inviting you to stare at it. She’s just warm and needs to release some heat.

4. Don’t ridicule others

This might sound common sense, but in reality, I see too many #gymfails passing by on social media. Of course it can be funny when someone totally misunderstands the purpose of a machine, but they are trying and they can’t do everything right the first time. To ridicule others who are new, like you once were too, is just sad. Instead, smile and go over there to help! Who knows, maybe they know a secret exercise that you don’t 😉

5. Stop taking so many selfies

You’re there to work out, not to take a fotoshoot. The occasional selfie is allowed (we know you have to have some material for your Instagram account), but don’t overdo it. Especially not while you’re still occupying a machine – someone else might be waiting for you to finish your workout so he or she can use it, so take that perfect snap somewhere else. And by the way, if you’re still looking cute and adorable during your workout, you’re not working hard enough.

6. Don’t make eye contact with people on certain machines…

Please, please, please, avoid this intense awkwardness.

Raw Lavender Honey Cheesecake

This recipe is amazing! Cheesecake without any nasties, dairy or gluten that tastes heavenly, need I say more? I have been wanting to try a raw vegan cheesecake for a while now and figured my birthday was the perfect occasion for it. Luckily it turned out great – especially considering that I have a history of cakeless birthdays due to some baking failures – and the cake was a hit!

Start with making the crust. Surround the inside of a cake pan with wax paper. Process the dates, almond meal, and oatmeal together until you get a rough, sticky mixture. Pat this down in the cake pan and place this in the freezer. For the cheesecake, blend all ingredients together in a food processor until it’s really smooth and creamy. Pour the mixture over the crust in the cake pan and set in the freezer for about 3-4 hours or overnight. Then take the cake out, slice it up, and enjoy!

1. Try this delicious Banana Peanut butter oatmeal. Here’s how it’s made:
– Put the oats in a small pan and add almond milk (the oats have to swim). Of course you can use regular milk or water
– Put the pan on the stove
– Mix half of a banana and a teaspoon of peanut butter and add it to your oats
– Bring it to a boil and keep stirring
– Add some chia seeds and coconut flakes

Listen to your body

Some time ago, we received a question from Irene. She sometimes feels that working out for 4 hours isn’t good enough and she is afraid that her cheats are worse than those of the other Fit Girls.  Moreover, Irene worries that her healthy lifestyle might become an obsession. So her question is, how do we deal with that? And do we all experience this?

Don’t worry Irene, we all experience this! I certainly do.  But trust me when I am saying that working out for 4 hours a week is good enough! Everyone is different and has their own schedule. You don’t have to work out everyday to feel good. It all depends on the time you have, your surroundings and what you think is enough. Listen to your body and try to put everything in perspective.

Of course, being confronted with these perfect images on a daily basis is difficult, but, on the other hand, what is perfect? I can sometimes feel really insecure about these pictures as well, but then why would I want to look like that? And then I think everyone looks beautiful in their own way. Try to think about these pictures as people who have imperfections as well. Nobody is perfect, but everyone is beautiful in their own way! The most important part is that you’re staying fit and healthy while listening to your body.

Moreover, don’t be afraid that your cheats are worse than those of the other Fit Girls. We love cheat days! And that’s why we don’t hold back during those days. Believe me when I say that on my cheat day I eat a full bag of crisps, one chocolate bar and drink sodas. Everyone has their own way of doing stuff. Try to do what feels good for you and try not to feel guilty. You’ve worked so hard, you deserve a cheat day :).
