We love sharing inspirational stories from Fit Girls around the world. This time Briana from Arizona shares how she fell in love with the weightroom.

Girls. We hear the ‘M’ word and shy away from it. Some of us may want it, but society tells us it’s not feminine enough. Many look at it as something only men should strive to attain. But in reality, it’s what we all desire in our active lives: muscle. Society, from an early age, has told young girls and women alike that we should get ‘toned’. That we should love only cardio and stay away from heavy weights and fear the idea of building muscle. I’m here to let you know that muscle may be the best thing that has happened to me.

Crushing on the weightroom
At 5’3, I have always been an athletic, petite, small-framed girl. Throughout high school and college my main goal was to be skinny. The smaller, the less curvy, the more waif-ish, the better. That was until I moved out on my own and fell in the love with the feeling of callused hands and heavy dumbbells. Many women are focused on weight loss, but for the ladies out there looking to gain some mass, or those who want to ‘tone’ (just another word for gaining lean muscle!) I want to share my journey so far. In May of this year, I began working out on the weight room floor. I stepped off the treadmill and used a Smith Machine for the first time in my life. Did I know what I was doing? No. Was I a little self conscious of what all of the men would think as I began squatting, most likely with bad form? Sure. But ultimately, my desire to push my body past it limits, to use it as the power house it really is, was more important than looking silly as a beginner. We all start somewhere.

This challenge is meant to help you strengthen and tone your entire body. Getting muscle definition depends per person so unfortunately we can’t guarantee abs like Fit Girl Chris or a Booty like Beyoncé at the end of this challenge. But it’s definitely a great way to start! Also remember: food is as important as the workouts. Stay away from crappy food as much as you can and stick to one cheat day a week. Be sure to have a look at all our recipes! Eating healthy doesn’t mean boring or less tasty 🙂

Remember, this is YOUR challenge so try doing what you can do. Do not overdo it. You can challenge yourself, but try to do it wisely. It’s always better to get to your goal, even if it takes you longer than a month. The most important thing is that you get to your goal!

Willpower is the drive behind self-control

Some days I live up to everything I promised myself in the morning. I eat proper meals and healthy snacks throughout the whole day. After work I cycle to the gym and kill my work out like a mad woman. And when I go for drinks with my friends later that night, I don’t lose self-control, but crawl into bed at a civilized time.

But the following day could be total disaster. I’ll bury my head in a pint of Ben&Jerry’s, make up excuses to skip my work out, and drink so much that I’d be hungover as shit the next morning. I recently watched the presentation of Professor Roy Baumeister, a respected social psychologist specializing in self-control and self -regulation. I discovered that the behavior I just described has everything to do with self-control and willpower.

Willpower is the drive behind self-control

What does self-control and willpower mean exactly? It’s the capacity to change yourself based on some standard or idea you consider as good or beneficial in the long run. And willpower is the energy behind self-control.

Self-control is limited
It seems that people who have these qualities straight are more successful in work or school and have longer lasting and happier relationships. This fact might not be a revelation to most of us. On the contrary, it intuitively makes sense. But the following was a real eye opener to me: our capacity for self-control is limited. If you expand some of it, you’ll have less (at least for a while). Even if your next task or goal doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the previous one. The next desire that comes along, you are more likely to give into it.

Let’s take another look a my situation. It’s possible that I skip my work out and down a whole pint of Ben&Jerry’s instead, because the day before I successfully resisted these temptations. In other words: I used up my willpower

Your willpower is like a muscle:

  • It gets tired after exertion
  • Conserving energy
  • Regular exercise increases strength

Don’t do it all at once
You have one stack of will power. If you put it into one thing it may not be available for others. For example, if you have several important resolutions for the next year, you should do them in sequence. Each resolution is usually a way to change yourself so it takes self-control and will power. If you have several of these at once and if you try to change your life in four different ways you’ll most likely fail. Each time you put energy in one of them, you are taking away the energy to do the others. So it’s best to pick one, succeed at it and move on to the other one. Succeeding at the first resolution will actually strengthen your muscle and give you a greater capacity to succeed at the next one.

The importance of cheat- and rest days
After watching the presentation of Professor Baumeister I see cheat- and rest days (a day without a work out) in a different light. I realize now that rest days are not only a way to allow my body to recover, it’s also a beneficial to my mind and thus my willpower. Scheduling a mandatory break from training will help you get excited break a sweat the next day. The same goes for cheat days. If I resist every single French fry or Oreo that comes my way, my willpower will crack eventually. But if I give into the temptation occasionally, I take good care of my willpower and self-control muscle. 🙂

Apple cinnamon banana bread

A few weeks ago Fit Girl Roos gave me her personal recipe for a delicious banana bread. Honestly, it was a while ago since I did some baking, so I was glad she got me back in the kitchen. The original recipe is with shredded coconut, but after I tried that one a couple of times, I decided to make an apple, cinnamon variation. You really gotta try this one because it tastes like apple pie! Super yummy 🙂 If you make one on Sunday you have a healthy snack (or easy breakfast) throughout the whole week! For me personally, the invention of a healthy banana bread is a true Fit Girl life hack. So here we go!

Apple cinnamon banana bread

Ingredients:

  • 8 large tablespoons finely ground oatmeal
  • 1 big apple
  • 4 large eggs
  • 4 egg whites
  • 4 mashed ripe bananas
  • 100 to 150 ml of unsweetened almond milk or skim milk
  • 2 handfuls raisins
  • 1 handful of chopped walnuts
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 scoop vanilla whey
  • Optional: 3 tablespoons pure stevia

The recipe is super easy!

  • Heat the oven to 190 degrees
  • Mix the eggs with the bananas with an electric mixer or whisk
  • Chop the apple into little pieces and add it to the banana egg mixture
  • Add all the other ingredients too
  • Greas the a rectangular cake tin and pour the mixture into it. Sprinkle the chopped walnuts on top the cake.
  • Put the cake in the oven for 40-50 minutes until the top is golden brown. It’s okay if the inside of the cake is still a little bit moist.

Positives:

  • Variety of moves
  • Easy as I was already quite fit
  • Slimmer hips and stomach at the end
  • It works

Negatives:

  • The layout of the glossary at the back is not in alphabetical order
  • The weekly layout is not as clear as the second guide, with the first guide you have to keep flicking back and forth whereas the second guide lays it out a lot better
  • Not stating the weights next to the moves and only at the back so unless you read the glossary you are unsure of the weights to use

Experience

Why I started
I started the Bikini Body Guide July 2014 as I had a running injury and could not run over 2k without struggling. This frustrated me so I wanted to see what else I could do. I had recently joined Instagram and was following a few fitness pages and copying there moves but needed solid routines. I found Kayla and really liked the way she looked so I thought I would try the guide.

The guide
Once I got the guide I read the instructions and knew what I had to do in terms of the rounds and timing myself. The first guide is a mix of resistance training, on Monday you do legs, Wednesday you focus on arms and Friday you focus on abs. You also have to do LISS which is low intensity walking and stretching. Later in the guide you have to sprint which is HIIT high intensity interval training. I liked the variation with everything. For me exercising that regularly was not a problem but I know for others it might be.

Tip to new girls
My first tip to all girls is: read the instructions. I see so many people on Instagram asking Kayla things that the guide explains and it frustrates me to see that. How can you take on a journey that requires patience if you are not patient enough to read what is required? I would advise people to read the glossary at the back as it tells you the weights to use even though I listed the glossary as a negative one. I knew how to do most moves so I didn’t read the glossary which states the weights you should use. I was using lighter weights than I should have. This gave me strength and helped me but I regretted this. I will explain about this later.

YAY! #FITGIRLCODE wins VIVA400 Award

Yesterday was a really exciting day, because the VIVA400 Awards took place in Amsterdam. Aranka en Laura dressed up for the occasion and went to the College Hotel in Amsterdam. After nearly 39.000 votes were counted and the judges had given their final vote, it was finally time to announce the winners. So many inspiring women gathered together to raise their glass. The category ‘Online’, which we were nominated in, was the last one of the evening. But definitely not the least, because we FREAKING WON!!! Of course everyone says it, but we honestly did not expect to win. We had some truly great competitors like Yara Mitchels and Negin Mirsaleh.

20 Facts About Fit Girl Anna

There is this tag going viral on Instagram to share 20 facts about yourself. I tried to find out who started this hype, but I couldn’t figure it out. Kinda mysterious right? The only thing I know is that Roos Kranenburg tagged me 🙂 Anyway, for anyone who wants to get to know me a little bit better, please read my following 20 quirks.

1. I have lost 15 kg. My personal fit journey started half a year ago.

2. Two weeks ago I ran 12k in 1.07 hour. That’s an amazing milestone to me. If someone would have told me this a year ago, I’d probably laughed right at his face.

3. My ultimate fantasy is to be in a bath, covered with mozarella, basil, tomato and pinenuts. And okay, with a little bit of hummus on the side.

4. My guilty pleasure is definitely drinking wine and eating cheese.

5. I consider myself a burgundian (to justify my sometimes lincentious behavior).

6. Five years ago I bought myself a pencil skirt. Actually it never fit me, until a month ago. Yay!

7. I prefer Samsung over Apple

8. I was born in The Hague, raised in a hamlet called Numansdorp, and now live in Rotterdam.

9. My house is like a zoo; I have two cats, one dog and one boyfriend. Oh-shit I got engaged this week, so I don’t have a boyfriend anymore I got a fiance now. (WOW that sounds so grown up).

10. I can’t stand brooms. The sound they make on paving and brick floors make my skin crawl. The same goes for electric tooth brushes.

11. One day I wanna make a road trip trough the United States.

12. I hate to wear thongs, I prefer hipsters.

13. The most beautiful memories I have, lie in Cape Town. I really wanna go back there someday.

14. I traveled three months through Asia by myself. It was awesome

15. Although Cees van Oeveren is the love of my life, he has to share my love with doggy Pien. I love how she wiggles her tiny butt for me every day.

16. I’m really addicted to watching TV series. When my current favorite TV show is ending I get really nervous. To prevent myself from falling into a black hole, I speedily go looking for a new dose of TV entertainment.

17. I love holding babies, but I get really awkward around toddlers. I just don’t know what to tell them.

18. I wish a was a surf girl.

19. I still, and will always hate burpees.

20. I think anteters are one of the coolest animal species in the world.

Acknowledge your feelings

I am someone who really needs structure in her life. I’m an impulsive and fluttery person and structure and predictability keep me balanced. That sounds kinda boring, but because of my personality I really need this in my life. I always long for change and new things to happen, but as soon as it’s there it throws me off my game.

The urge to binge
So what enormous life changing things happened to me? Well, my boyfriend and me used to have the same working schedules. So I got used to have dinner together, workout together, be a couch potatoes together and go to sleep together. I might make it sound like we never did anything apart, we do live our separate lives, but I just got really used to spending our evenings like this. Anyway, my BF recently got a new job. Therefore he now has another working schedule than me, and that means that I have to spend (most) of my weeknights alone. I like spending time by myself (watching Pretty Little Liars, polishing my nails, taking a long warm bath etc.) but to me it has a downside as well: I feel the urge to give into binges again. It’s something that I didn’t have to deal with for a long time, and I have to be honest; this urge kinda scares me. I worked so hard to get where I am today, and I’m just really scared that I relapse back into my old behaviour.

Social control
I tried to analyze why this urge is suddenly bugging me again, and I think it has something to do with the fact that there is no one around to keep an eye on me. It’s not like Cees (my BF) is always telling me what to eat and what not, but his presence feels like social control to me. And without him being around, this form of social control is gone. It makes sense though, because if I look back on the eating disorder I had, it got better as soon as Cees and me started living together. I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) eat in secrecy anymore so I had to break these bad habits.

Acknowledge your feelings
I never wanna go back to where I came from so I’m going to fight this urge with every piece of willpower in my body. To me, the first step was to discuss this problem with my boyfriend. It might seem easier to bury your problems under a pile of your favourite comfort food, but it doesn’t solve anything. Saying it out loud made the problem even more real and forced me to go deal with my shit.

So whenever you are worked up, sad, angry or stressed about something: acknowledge your feelings! It’s to the first step to recovery 😉

Real Unretouched Butts

Us Fit Girls, literally squat our butts off to look like Jen Selter. And it’s not just us, professional models do to. Yeah, I know they sort of get paid to go to the gym, but still: they work really hard to look great in photos. After the shoot, photographers and designers work just as hard in the studio to make their bums look even more flawless. Real women and their untouched butts don’t have the benefit of such digital work.

Refinery29 thinks that all butts should be cherished, especially the untouched ones – from the au courant round booty to the pancake-ier shape that has fallen by the cultural wayside. From cellulite, stretch marks, and age spots to the perkiest of young butts, we believe they all deserve to have an “official era.” And, that era should be all the time. We couldn’t agree more!

That’s why Refinery29 photographed the butts of 30 women. And, they asked the women how they feel about their backsides — what they love, what they think is funny, and whether or not Vogue‘s “radical” acceptance of bodies larger than a sample size has affected their lives. Ahead, 30 butts of all shapes and sizes, both bare and festively adorned. No Photoshop!

“I feel pretty good about my butt. I have a small chest — and a small upper body in general — but in spite of some weight fluctuations over the years, I’ve always had a nice set of Polish hips and a solid booty to go along with them. Marlou van Rhijn, badass babe on blades

Earlier this week Nike unveiled their new ‘Just do it’ campaign with a series of short videos featuring inspiring icons, including Dutch paralympic athlete Marlou van Rhijn. The videos are a tribute to active women who always want to get stronger and try to get more out of themselves. Their campaign inspires this new generation of women, the ones who are always on the move, taking action and embracing their inner tenacity, spontaneity and drive…And we love it!!!

Les Mills – Immersive Fitness: a revolutionary workout concept

#FITGIRLCODE got invited by fitness pioneers Reebok and Les Mills to join the PROJECT – Immersive Fitness in Amsterdam. The invitation promised us a new, revolutionary and futuristic workout concept. Of course we got really curious, so last Wednesday we went to Amsterdam to discover this new fitness world.

Total immersion
The first thing we saw when we arrived at Museumplein in Amsterdam was a big black box. The thing alone looked very mysterious already. Before we could enter the box, we had to change ourselves into really cool Reebok fitness clothes. While we enjoyed the sun and some really jummy and healthy snacks from Saskia. Les Mills Junior told us about the purpose of the Project. He told us that Immersive Fitness is meant to take fitness to a whole new level. People who’ll participate in an Immersive Fitness class will be surrounded with immense 3D video. Les Mills uses the newest Wrap-Around projectors and LED technology. Immersive Fitness gives group fitness a new, visual dimension. The result is ‘total immersion’. Instead of counting repetitions and following instructions from a trainer, the participant now mainly responds to visual instructions.

Immersive fitness makes spinning look appealing
After the inspiring words of Les Mills Junior we couldn’t wait to get started. The event got kicked of with an Immersive Spinning class. Aranka and me really, really hate spinning so we decided to sit this one out. We were present in the room though, because we were curious what was about to happen. When we walked into the room, we entered a whole different world. People started their workout somewhere in the universe and while they were cycling they came across star formations like the Great Bear. The workout really started when they arrived at Immerse Planet. Although I was a spectator I really felt part of the world they were cycling in. Whenever they reached a bend in the road or were descending or climbing a hill, it felt super realistic. I even got a bit of that feeling you get in your stomach when you go down in a rollercoaster. And we were not even on the bike! I have to admit that I really regretted not participating, because this total immersion experience made even a spinning class look appealing.

Bodyjam & Bodybalance
After the spinnings class it was our turn to break a sweat. We participated in the bodyjam & bodybalance class. We started out with some bodyjam exercises. I honestly have the physical coordination of an Eastern egg, so usually I look completely lost when it comes to quickly imitating the dance moves of an instructor. But I have to admit that the visual movements on the walls really helped me out here. Ofcourse I still didn’t look like someone who could participate in So You Think You Can Dance, but it could have been worse. After shaking our bum like Beyoncé, it was time to do some relaxing yoga moves. We were surrounded with a New Zealand looking scenery. Although it was very peaceful, the moving birds distracted me a bit when we had to do balance exercises. Normally I focus at one point, but because the whole surrounding kept moving that was pretty hard. All in all it was a really relaxing experience.

So if you’re tired of looking at the clock while sweating over your spinning bike or getting lost in dance move-related gym classes, than you should really find yourself a gym where they have Immersive Fitness classes. Aranka and I both agree that Les Mills lived up to their promise: this really is a revolutionary and futuristic workout concept.

Zucchini Spaghetti

Italian food is my all time favorite food. I love pizza, pasta, cheese and wine. And if the ab- and bumfairy would allow it, I’d stuff myself 7 days a week with delicious smelling, greasy, cheesy pasta and pizza! But unfortunately the fit fairies are not as forgiving as you might wish!

Luckily I found a recipe that satisfies my craving for pasta and pleases the fit fairies as well! It’s called: zucchini spaghetti! I wouldn’t believe it at first, but to me these vegetable spaghetti strings have the same sensation as regular pasta!

All you need to make the perfect vegetable spaghetti, is a spiral cutter. I bought mine at Kookpunt in Rotterdam. It works like a pencil sharpener, but for veggies. Super easy! You can also use a Julienne peeler if you want.

This is what you need to make a delicious zucchini spaghetti:

4 servings

  • 5 Zucchinis
  • Carrots (optional)
  • Approx. 4 table spoons pesto
  • 2 handfuls of pine nuts
  • 2 cans borlotti beans
  • Box of cherry tomatoes (cut in half)
  • 2 red onions
  • Garlic, pepper, salt

How to:

  • Sharpe all the zucchini until there`s nothing left to sharpen. It’s impossible to sharpen the whole thing, so you’ll have a little left of the veggie. If you choose to add carrots, sharpen these too. You might think this is way too much for 4 people, but the strings will shrink when you fry them later.
  • Fry the pine nuts (without oil) until they are golden brown
  •  Cut the onion into small pieces and fry together with the minced garlic. Add the borlotti beans after 3 minutes.
  • Heat a wok, add some olive- or coconut oil and fry the veggies strings for 3 minutes.  No longer, because the vegetables release fluids and it will make your pasta watery.
  • Add the borlotti beans mixture to the spaghetti and stir. Finally add pesto, pine nuts and cherry tomatoes.
  • Serve with parmesan cheese and some fresh basil.

I am really curious what my fellow pasta junkies think about this healthier version!

 

Comfortable in my own skin

March this year I started blogging for #FITGIRLCODE. I was right at the beginning of my personal fit journey. In my first article I wrote about making sacrifices. It frustrated me that I couldn’t have both: drink wine, eat loads of cheese AND look like Beyoncé at the same time. But I had to admit that was just another excuse not to pursue my goals. So I decided to change. I cut (most of) the crap and started working out three to four times a week at Sixforty. And I’m still hanging in there! There’s one thing I’m damn sure about, I am never going back to where I came from. I definitely unlocked my personal code to a healthy life style.

I’m slowly transforming into Anna 2.0, and sometimes I reflect on who I was before I started this journey. Ofcourse I do that in terms of how much weight I lost, and how many clothing sizes I shrunk, but I also noticed that my self-image really changed. For example, when I started writing for #FITGIRLCODE, we did a photoshoot together with all the bloggers. I felt so uncomfortable posing for the camera and you can really tell that by looking at the pictures that were made. Fortunately, we recently did the photoshoot for the #FITGIRLCODE webshop and those photos are awesome. I felt much more confident being photographed because I was finally comfortable in my own skin. I’m not gonna lie, there are still photos where I don’t like the way I look, but there are way more photos I’m really proud of. Check out the difference in my facial expression in the pictures on the next pages. Not that awkward anymore, right?

So whenever you’re feeling down or your going trough a fit dip, imagine yourself six months from now. It will be worth it!

30 Day Arm Challenge

Yay! It’s time for a new challenge: the 30 Day Arm Challenge. We often hear from women that training their arm muscles is not their favourite activity. That’s probably because arm exercises can get pretty intense, but did you know that your shoulders and upper back tend to carry less fat than the rest of your body? So doing the right arm exercises can give this area a nearly instant make-over! You will feel and see muscles you didn’t even know you had!

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN US
There are so many reasons you should join us. When you repeat something for 30 days you subconsciously teach yourself to add a certain routine to your lifestyle. So it makes it easier to work out! Ain’t that awesome! Also:

  1. It helps you get fit (obviously)
  2. You train yourself to be disciplinary
  3. It’s great for your self esteem
  4. We love that you workout with us, no matter how many miles we are apart!

AND HERE’S HOW…

1. Normal push-up
The beauty of the push-up is that you can do it anywhere, anytime. This exercise targets not only your arms and chest but also gets a burn going in your core.

Instruction: Start with a face-down prone position on the floor. Keep your feet together. Your weight should be on your chest // Position hands palms-down on the floor, slightly wider than your shoulders, with your elbows pointed towards your toes // Now raise yourself using your arms. At this point, your weight should be supported by your hands and the balls of your feet // Make a straight line from your head to your heels. This position is called a “plank,” which is used for various other exercises //This is the beginning and end position of a single push-up.

Down on your knees
If you are not ready to do a regular push-up yet, then try doing them on your knees. You can also start with regular push-ups and switch to knee push-ups when it gets too heavy. Follow the instructions for regular push-ups, but keep both knees on the floor. Be sure to use your chest, shoulders and triceps to lift yourself, not your hips or back.

2. Reverse push-up
A reverse push-up is the complete opposite of a regular push-up. Your hands and feet are still contacting the ground, except you are in an inverted position.

Instruction: Start out lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor// Place your hands on the ground by your ears with your palms flat and your fingers facing your feet. Your elbows should be up in the air at this point // Lift your hips up toward the ceiling and simultaneously push your shoulders off the floor by activating your arms //Fully extend your arms, arch your back and lift your heels off the floor// Slowly lower yourself back to the ground and repeat // When you lift your body up, you should form a nice, consistent arc and your head should be hanging straight down.

3. Kettlebell lifts
You may have seen more and more people at the gym swinging what looks like a cannonball with a handle. Those weird looking weights are called kettlebells and they’ve been used by Russian strongmen for over two centuries to “become strong like bull.” If you don’t own a kettle bell, you can get one here, or use a dumbbell or even a big soda bottle filled with water.

Instruction: Sit down on your knees and place your kettlebell (/dumbbell/soda bottle) in front of you //Grab the weight with your both hands, keep your elbows to your side and raise it up to your chest and back // Make sure you keep your back straight en push your pelvis forward when you lift up the weight.
