How to wash smelly sportswear? 4 things you need to know!

One down side to being a Fit Girl is that you’re laundry basket is never empty! Smashing a sweaty workout several times a week comes at the price of endless, smelly laundry. It’s about time that someone investigated how to wash smelly sportswear for us Fit Girls so we can keep our workout wardrobe looking as awesome as we feel and smelling good.

Why do people think we are always saying a Fit Girl can never have enough workout clothes?! Because we just can’t keep up with washing them! Maybe you’ll admit that you don’t wash your jeans or bra after every wear but how are you supposed to wash your workout clothes? Here are 4 things you need to know to do it right!

1. Detergent and dead skin

When it comes to washing workout clothes my natural instinct is to put them in with as much detergent as possible on high heat. Surely extra soap and heat is all it needs to get rid of the bacteria. WRONG. Adding extra detergent is actually worse. Your washing machine cycle is only set to handle so much soap so it can’t rinse all of the excess off in the same length of time, trapping dead skin cells into the fabric and bacteria continues to grow. If you feel like your clothes still smell, its probably mildew which feeds off of the soap that wasn’t washed off in the cycle! Yikes, less is more in this case!

2. Funky fragrances and fabric softeners

If you use fragranced fabric softener in your washing it makes sense that you would add it to your workout clothes too. They’re potentially the smelliest items in your wardrobe so why wouldn’t you want to walk into the gym smelling like fresh cotton or lavender fields (whatever your preference)?!  But this is actually counter productive for the purpose of workout clothes because fabric softener traps fragrances into fabric. So in essence, you’re trapping the sweaty smelliness into the clothes! That certainly didn’t occur to me. Not only this, fabric softener damages anything that is elastic so it’s doing your gear more harm than good.

3. Do I have to wash my yoga pants as often as my running tights?

According to dermatoligist Dierdre Hooper, the answer is yes, you do have to wash them after every wear. You might think after an easy Hatha yoga class that didn’t you break a sweat but the tight fitting style of clothing means, sweat or no sweat, bacteria rubs off of you and onto your clothes while you wear them. She says, “Many of those bacteria will still be on those clothes the next day—possibly in higher number if they’ve multiplied, which they can do even when the clothes are dry.” Putting them back on means you expose yourself to now – fortified bacteria or yeast and risk irritating your skin and increase the chance of getting an infection!

4. So how do I kill all that nasty stuff without ruining them?

You are not doomed to smell forever don’t worry. Instead of following the normal washing procedure follow these steps to get keep your gear in good form and fresh ore you put them on!

  • Turn everything inside-out to protect the colours. It’s also the inside of the clothes that need the deepest clean because that’s where all of the sweat and skin cells are rubbing onto!
  • If you have the time to, soak clothes in a mixture of cold water and half a cup of white vinegar for 15 to 30 minutes before you put them in the machine. This cleans some of the gross stuff that has built up during and after your workout.
  • Use a small amount of detergent, slightly less than the recommended amount for the size of the load.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water as hot water can damage the fabric causing your beloved clothes to shrink! And the same goes for drying. Use the coolest setting on the dryer so as not to shrink them or better yet be eco-friendly too and let them dry by air!

Now you know how to wash smelly sportswear, get your dirty tights smelling clean, keep your workout wear in good condition and get even more out of your detergent! But it can be our little secret so that you can still use not having enough fresh sports clothes as the excuse to go and buy more, we won’t tell!

Why aren’t you noticing the fitness results you want?

Are you on a fitness train to nowhere? Have you been putting in hours of exercise but aren’t seeing the fitness results you expected? Even though you might be getting sweaty several times per week, there are some reasons you might not be toning or losing in the places you’d like to. 

 

What’s the deal?

These days we are overwhelmed by endless new “it” workouts said to work magic on all parts of the body. I know they are tempting, and it’s tough to resist when friends are constantly insisting, “You haaave to come try this [insert trendy workout here] with me! It’s amazing!” With all these new ways to work out, we can lose touch of what is best for our body, since we are all different and have different goals.

You’re putting so much time and energy into workouts so you are off to a great start. If you find yourself thinking that you should be looking more like the women you see on the workout videos you’re following, you might not be directing your efforts in an effective way.

What’s the plan?

HAVE ONE.

In order to see results, you should tailor your workouts to your fitness goals. For example, if you want to build arm muscle, a Zumba class probably won’t help you much. Do your research and develop a schedule that fits your fitness mission rather than randomly selecting classes or workouts.

Make sure to keep track of your progress and hold yourself accountable for your workouts. You can use a fitness app such as one of these to help you stay on track and make sure you are balancing your workouts well. I for one am sometimes tempted to only do core exercises, but that booty needs some work too!

Remember to have a backup plan. If you were planning to go for a run but the storm of the year has decided to pour down on you, opt for a dance video or a jog on the treadmill instead. If your boot camp class gets cancelled last-minute, do some lunges, pushups, and other body-weight moves at home or at the gym.

Keep your favorite workout in the mix. Even if your absolute favorite way to exercise isn’t directly related to your current health and fitness goals, keep it in your schedule. It will keep you motivated and will give you a good dose of those endorphins to push you through the workouts you aren’t as crazy about!

 

Most of all, remember to listen to your body! If something doesn’t feel right it probably isn’t helping you like you want it to. Set goals, keep track of them, and find ways to stay motivated and hopefully you’ll start seeing the fitness results you deserve to!

The many benefits of exercising outdoors

Ever heard the saying “you’re just one workout away from a good mood”? We totally live by this, and some of us prefer hitting the gym while others go outside in rain or shine. Have you ever thought about how your satisfaction, the efficacy of your workout, and your mood might differ if you exercise indoors or outdoors? 

There are some physical differences between working out indoors on stationary equipment or outdoors, but the major differences have to do with mental benefits. I’ll take you through both so that you know when it might be nicest to go to the park with your #BFFF like Fit Girl Vladana and I did today instead of hitting the treadmill or the elliptical at the gym.

Get the most out of your workout

The gym has some obvious benefits, especially in terms of predictability and convenience- you know exactly when the gym opens, closes, and what the temperature will be like. The presence of many different types of equipment in the gym is also practical if you plan to, for example, do a circuit training on your own and are not able to carry kettle bells, mats, barbells, and stability balls around with you. Going to the gym is a safe bet if you want to squeeze in a great WOD when the weather outside is just not on your side. However in terms of getting the most out of a workout, you’re better off taking your booty outdoors.

Jogha Fearless collection launch

Back in 2013 I had the dream of starting my own sportswear line. Now, the second Jogha sportswear collection, the Fearless collection, is finally almost ready for launch! Last week was busy with some final preparations as we had the official photoshoot and on the very same day, I flew off to Thailand for a 48 hour production trip.

On November 17th 2014, we launched the very first Jogha sportswear line named, the Badass collection. This collection truly was a great success and we learned so much from the first range of clothing. We believe in the phrase, “Do the best you can, until you know better. Then when you know better, do better”. So now all that we want is to be even better! We took our time and turned to the most important people: our Jogha customers. They spoke and we listened. They gave us so many great ideas and now we bring you the improvements in our new sportswear, the Fearless collection.

What exactly did we improve?

We made lots of changes to improve the general fit of all of the garments as well as designing additional features and adding new variations. As all of the small sizes of the Badass collection sold out quickly, we decided that we needed to have more small and medium sizes available for the Fearless collection so that you won’t be disappointed.

Tights and bottoms: The feedback we received about our Long Tights was that they weren’t exactly very “long”, but more an above the ankle length. For the Fearless collection we ensure that we have made the Long Tights longer and we’ve also added a new capri length legging with a completely new look and feel.

Tops: We listened very closely to all of the feedback considering the sports bras as this is such an an essential item in a woman’s sportswear wardrobe. Firstly we made big changes to our Racerback Bra, so much so that you won’t even recognize it as the same bra any more. Not everything has completely changed however, the Gym Bra returns as before but with an overall improved fit. And lastly, because a bra is so important we added a completely new style, the Sports Bra, that will blow your mind.

Jackets: The Reversible Jackets are now made from a new revolutionary material and we decided to make the fit a little more oversized, so you can snuggle away in it after your workout.

Fair wear and Sustainability

We are a fair wear brand that has demanded sustainable production from day one. But this isn’t something we have been advertising because it’s normal to us, it’s what just we do. However by not communicating this directly to our customers, we risked the chance that they didn’t even know the extent of how awesome their sportswear was! But the newest sustainable feature of this collection, DryDye technology, is just too incredible not to share it with you. This exclusive technology is a completely waterless dyeing method which uses recycled C02 to dye the DryDye pieces in this collection and is the first of many sustainable ways we want to produce our sportswear.

The Fearless Photoshoot in Rotterdam

To capture the new Fearless collection, our incredibly talented photographer Victor Kruit shot around 1500 pictures during the official photoshoot last Wednesday in Rotterdam. With over 6o pieces in this collection, the shoot took place from 8am in the morning to 5pm in evening. It was the first time that we were able to see the collection come to life thanks to the help of our beautiful models and it was amazing!

48 Hour production trip to Thailand

Just as well, I am a CEO in sneakers and straight after the shoot I has to rush off to Schiphol Airport and hop on board of a flight to Thailand. But this wasn’t for a holiday. I took the trip to visit the factories we work with, as there were still some small things we noticed on the photoshoot which had to be changed and taken care of asap!

How to find the perfect tights



See-through, too wide, no elastic band, a zipperbag, no drawstring, itchy labels.. I think we all know these struggles of being a Fit Girl. How are we ever supposed to find the perfect tights?  No worries, you will. You just have to keep some things in mind.

I’ve tried on quite some tights and I am the proud owner of at least 40 of them, so I would like to share my experience in finding the perfect tights.  Here are some guidelines that can be really important for finding the perfect tights.

1 | MOVE
Please, use all the space you have in your dressing room (or out of it, we don’t mind!). Squat, jump, lay down, handstand, wall-sit, stretch, booty-shake and so on. You’re not buying tights because you want to sit still in them, are you? Let’s give it a quick road-test and decide if it:
♥ Does they stay in place? Pulling up your pants all the time is a waste of your energy. Search for tights with a decent elastic waistband that stays up.
♥ Do they have enough stretch? You don’t want to feel irritating seams during your workout.
♥ Are they non see-through? Because see-through pants just aren’t really classy.
♥ Does the crotch look okay? Preferably no seams that go straight down the middle to the back. You don’t want it too be too tight because we all know what happens if it does..! But not too large either. We don’t need that extra space down there, that just looks weird.

2 | Pockets and zippers
When buying a pair of tights I always love it when they have ‘hidden’ pockets. However I don’t like a zipper in the back because it’s going to hurt when you lay down to doing exercises like sit-ups or crunches. I prefer the stretchy pockets that don’t have any strings or zippers because if you don’t use them, you don’t feel them.

Best snowy workout for this February

The last winter month is ahead of us and some of you might be stuck in snowy cities with no motivation to leave the house for gym. Well we got good news for all of you: no need to go far in order to workout. Just grab a shovel and go outside and make your yard clean and your body fit and strong.

For this workout you only need 2 “ingredients”: snow and a shovel. Once you got that covered, you can start your snowy workout with these 4 moves:

1. Shovel Squatssnowy workout

For the first exercise just bend down and lift each shovel full of snow. When doing the squats make sure you do it right. The best way to protect your back is to avoid lifting with it, but doing so with your legs. Also, when working out you must make sure to focus on a good squat form. You can easily do so by putting your feet in shoulder-width or slightly wider position, bending your knees, this way keeping your back straight, and have the chest lifted. Stop when your thighs are more or less parallel to the ground in order to scoop the snow onto your shovel and return to the standing position.

2. Standing Oblique Shovel Twistssnowy workout

Once you’ve lifted the shovel, the best thing you could do is to carry your snow to a pile of it rather than flipping it over your shoulder. While you do that, make sure you stand tall and tuck the hips under, bracing the core, and rotate to each side 5 times to engage the obliques.

Customize your Adidas shoes

Have you been looking for shoes that perfectly match that sports top? Or shoes in that one colour that you can’t find in any store? Create them yourself! Adidas enables you to create your own Mi Adidas shoes, of which you can choose all the different colours. And the huge advantage: it’s not that expensive. Here’s how I experienced customizing my own Adidas shoes. 

When I decided I needed a new pair of (fashionable) running shoes, I went to the Adidas website and saw these Duramo 6 shoes, which I already liked in their standard look. Then I noticed a button saying ‘customise’. With my dream pair of black running shoes with coral accents in the back of my mind, I got down and dirty customizing. The result is completely what I hoped for! On the  right you see the virtual shoe and on the left the result. Pretty cool huh?

Customizing your dream pair

There are many pros to customizing your own Adidas shoe. Most importantly, you get to choose your own colours and create the shoe you have been looking for. But next to that, I found my Duramo 6 shoes perfect for running and exercising – they run heavenly. Furthermore, you get two pairs of laces so you can replace them once in a while. And all this for about 20 euros extra on the price! My Duramo 6 shoes were originally 60 euros, and my customized version cost 80 euros. Perfect!

Of course there are some (slight) disadvantages: it takes a while before you get them. These shoes are being made only for you, so don’t expect them to be delivered within a week. I had to wait about 4-6 weeks before I got them, but I’m glad I did, because it was worth it! A disadvantage I luckily did not encounter is the fact that you cannot return them. As I said, they are being made only for you, so returning them is not an option. So be certain that you love your masterpiece, because once they are yours, they are yours forever. (Sounds scary, doesn’t it?)

So how does it work? Well, it’s fairly easy: you look for a shoe model that you like. Then check whether there is a ‘customise’ button at the right side, and it will lead you through the process! Easy peasy right? Happy customizing!

Adidas Ultimate Fit Legging

My first running tights were the Ultimate Fit Legging from Adidas, and after using them for 3 months now, I decided I should write a review about it. When I buy sportswear, I always think hard about the quality and look up experiences of others to see if the leggings don’t start sagging or lose color after washing them once. Besides, the price should also be reasonable, after all, I’m still a student! So here we go, the pros and cons of these printed babies of Adidas.

Looks

First of all, I love the print! That’s really what I was looking for – not one of those boring, all-black tights, but a print that stands out and you wouldn’t mind being seen in. I had one of those really ugly, old training trousers which I didn’t dare to wear outside of my comfy home, so when I took up running again and started working out at a gym, I decided it was time to buy myself a pretty one. Adidas also has the same one in a different color, but black/grey/white is easy to combine with colorful shoes or tops. After three months I still love the print!

Price

These tights are 45 euro, so that’s kinda cheap compared to some of the tights I have seen! Still, they are more expensive than H&M so I assumed the quality would be somewhat higher as well. As a student, I am pleased with the price.

Fit

Although I initially didn’t like the fact that I was ordering it online (so I didn’t have a chance to try them on before I got them), my doubts immediately faded when I first put them on. It fits me perfectly! The waistband is at the right height so your muffin top gets flattened and the length is great – it goes down till your ankles.

Quality

The Ultimate Fit Legging has a hidden pocket on the side in which I can keep my key whenever I go running, so brownie points for that, Adidas! I must say that the print is fading a bit after 3 months of washing. I have been a good girl and followed the washing instructions, but still you can see that it’s starting to look a little bit used. On the other hand, I have used it extensively, so can I really blame the quality? And it hasn’t started sagging yet, so I really shouldn’t complain at all.

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase! The fit and looks are great and the price-quality ratio even better. I’d definitely recommend the Ultimate Fit Legging to you fit girls.

Top five must follow blogs

There are so many awesome blogs out there, which ones should you follow? I’m a bit new to Bloglovin (I know, I should be ashamed of myself), so I am not following a lot of blogs yet. However, I do have some favorites already! They range from fitness to fashion, from food to feel good. Check out my top 5 of must follow blogs at the moment!

  1. Anne Solveig
    Besides the fact that her blog is awesome, Anne is a really sweet girl! I’ve talked to her personally recently, and that makes her blog feel even more personal than it already is. This 21-year-old Dutchie blogs about fitness, food, fashion, make-up, city trips, and personal stuff. These topics are all balanced out and provide you with more than enough reading material. It is a light and easy read and is perfect to wake up with in the morning, so do check her out! Unfortunately you need to understand Dutch to read it (sorry international fit girls!).
  2. Fashercise
    Fashercise is the work of Alex and Camille, two Belgian best friends living in London. They post about a wide range of topics and believe that fashion and exercise should and can be combined. And wouldn’t we all like to look pretty while sweating like a pig? And if this isn’t enough already, they also discuss food, music, beauty & wellness, and gadget, with a dish of humor served on the side. Check out this blogpost, one of my favorites!
  3. Georgina Poh
    Georgina is so cute! She has a great sense of style and many inspiring work out ideas. Her food pictures make me think of the couple of months I spent in China and make me want to go back there! Ah well, I’ll just have to drewl over her food pictures, unless someone would like to sponsor a trip? (big puppy eyes)
  4. Food and Lycra
    The girls from Food & Lycra look like so much fun. Just by taking a look at their blog, you see how much they are enjoying their fit journey together. They are the best example of why you should have a BFFF (Best Fit Friend Forever)! Laura, Kim and Rachel blog about fitness, but also about food and fashion. What’s not to like?
  5. Follow Fashion
    I am not very good at spotting the first fashion trends and I don’t have super-awesome-pretty-stunning-fashionable clothes, but I do the best I can with the budget I have. Follow Fashion basically updates me on all the new trends so I get some inspiration for new outfits or how to combine that one shirt I have never been able to combine so far. They also blog about fitness, health and lifestyle, so definitely a must-follow. It is in Dutch though, but you can still go there for fashion inspiration even if you don’t understand the language.

Cellulite and how to deal with it

It’s almost sunny bikini season and I’m far from ready for it! My legs haven’t seen the sun in what feels like ages and in my head I somehow think I can just jump in a bikini and hit the beach! I mean, it’s not like I indulged in cheat meals over Easter or anything… 

So a couple of days ago I tried on one of those white bikinis from the new Giselle Bündchen H&M collection and, at a closer look in the mirror, there it was, my worst enemy, my greatest fear, the destroyer of confidence – Cellulite – *GASP*!!! 

Immediate action must be taken, so I went home and did my research, which turned out to be very fruitful and useful in dealing with that pesky thing that’s just so hard to get rid off! Needless to say there were dozens of myths and misconceptions to weed out but also a ton of information that turned out to be quite useful! I’m going to share all my newly acquired knowledge and experience with you!

What I really want to make clear: NO SHAME – all women can get it. No matter if you’re skinny or struttin’ some curves, this evil enemy can still get under your skin (pun intended). There are several reasons why this can happen, among which poor nutrition, fad dieting, slow metabolism, hormone changes, lack of physical activity and even dehydration (note to self: drink more water).

First things first: What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a persistent type of fat, that gathers under your skin, especially in the areas of the hips and thighs, and causes a dimpled, lumpy appearance. This can vary from an ‘orange peel’ look all the way to ‘cottage cheese’. Most of us have it and we all hate it, which is why you’re not going to like the next bit.

It’s hereditary! Why thank you, dear genes! This means that certain genes like gender, race, slow metabolism or circulatory insufficiency can predispose you to developing unwanted adipose tissue. Moreover, hormones apparently have a say in this too, especially insulin, noradrenaline (enables the body to perform well in stressful situations), and thyroid hormones. You can prevent it though – Just stay away from refined and processed foods, SUGAR, dairy and all kinds of fatty products.

Cellulite and how to deal with it

 Good news is you CAN get rid of it, BUT it takes time and perseverance…

 

  • Most importantly – EXERCISE – Make sure you get a lot of blood flow into those areas! It will make you feel good and look good. Cellulite can also be caused by muscular atrophy, a condition that occurs when a layer of muscle becomes weak, undefined and separates from the skin, which is why exercise is so important! Oh! Spice up your life (and food), that helps burn calories & increase blood flow!
  • Scrub Up – massaging your thighs using scrub can stimulate micro circulation, will make your skin look smoother and you’ll benefit from a bonus arm workout in the shower. Make sure you use circular movements, from bottom to top, guiding the blood flow towards your heart. One of my favorites is the Blueberry Body Scrub Jelly from Bodyshop. You can even make your own by mixing 1tbsp of used ground coffee, 1tbsp of coconut oil, 1tbsp of brown sugar and a dash of cinnamon.
  • You can also use one of these handy massagers to do the job ( you don’t wanna scrub off all your skin layers ). Use this baby to massage your target areas every time you hit the shower – yeah it won’t work overnight!
  • Creams DO help! They rehydrate your skin and help it gain more elasticity after working out. Look for one that also contains caffeine or Gingko Biloba – a substance that oxidises fat cells and strengthens your veins to improve blood circulation! It also increases your ability to remember things! Not bad, huh?!
