The only sun burn hacks you need to know this summer

Summer has finallyyyy arrived! I noticed that I started getting a tan a few days ago and I couldn’t be happier! I think I can speak for most of us when I say it feels like I’ve been waiting forever for better weather.. But before you pull out your shorts, tank tops, sundresses and shades, be sure to do everything in your power to avoid getting burnt. Here are the essential sun burn hacks to prevent you from getting burnt and also the tips on how to take care of it if it ever happens!

Preventing Sunburn

  • Sunscreen

I know, I know, this one may seem pretty obvious, but you won’t be able to guess just how many people actually forget their sun screen during summer. When you’re choosing your sunscreen, go for SPF 15 or higher and ones that have the ingredients ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, sulisobenzone, or zinc oxide. These ingredients contribute to blocking out the UVA rays.

  • Eat your greens

A large amount of antioxidants can be found in plants. You also find this in sunscreen. Coincidence? I think not! Antioxidants work to boost our body’s natural defense against harmful rays. Fresh herbs like parsley, basil, sage, and rosemary are filled with the stuff. Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and kale are also good sources of antioxidants. By eating the foods that are high in antioxidants, we get just a bit better at avoiding that sun burn!

  • Take in more Vitamin D

When you get enough Vitamin D, when you tan for example, your body starts to produce melanin to act as a sort of protective layer against further exposure. This protective shield is what you’ll want to help protect you against sun burn. Take Vitamin D supplements so that your body starts producing Melanin faster so that you can spend more time in the sun without worrying about sunburn.

Treating it fast

  • Aloe Vera ice cubes

This is a great herbal remedy for when you get sun burn. Think ahead, and take pure Aloe Vera and freeze it overnight in your ice tray. Then, all you have to do when you get sun burnt, is pull out a cube and rub it on your burns. The Aloe Vera alone will help to heal your skin, while the icy coolness will give you immediate relief!

  • Soak a towel in apple cider vinegar

Some people seriously swear by the use of vinegar to treat sunburns, so I had to include in in this list of sun burn hacks. I can’t tell you how, or why, but only that it works to help to heal your skin and inflamed tissue, and prevent your skin from peeling even more. Wet  a wash cloth with cold water and  then splash some apple cider vinegar to it. Apply the cloth to your sun burned skin and let the magic happen.

  • Use natural yogurt

Natural yogurt contains a huge amount of enzymes and probiotics that work to help heal your skin. So once you suffer from sun burn, applying natural yogurt to the spots will help you to recover. Let the yogurt sit on your skin for about 5 minutes until you start to feel relief, and then wash it off with cool water.

Use these sun burn hacks and you’ll be set for summer! Do you have any other tips you want to share? Let me know in the comments section! 🙂

8 #FITGIRLCODE festival essentials

Our favourite play time activity at #FITGIRLCODE is going to an outdoor festival on the weekends! There’s nothing like dancing for the equivalent of a 10K run in the sun and showing off that booty you’ve been working on for months. I have compiled a list of summer festival essentials that are meant to combine fashion and the optimal festival experience:

  • Fanny pack- This type of bag will make your life so easy while dancing and grooving, and you won’t need to worry about misplacing it anywhere. You can wear it around your waist or across your shoulder, so  many possibilities!
  • Romper with pockets- rompers provide comfort since they are soft and are not constraining, and they also allow adequate air flow to parts of your body that might get sweaty. Look for one with pockets so that you have a place to stow away any trinkets you find, like a lead singer’s guitar pick or your roommate’s keys that she is afraid to lose.
  • Wild and round sunglasses- Let loose with animal print-inspired sunglasses, I’ve chosen one pair of thick glasses and one pair of thin. Which suits you best?
  • Choker necklace- This accessory is easy to pair with any outfit, and you can keep it on all weekend without worrying about it or taking it off to swim, shower, or any other activities you wouldn’t want to wear your precious stones while doing.
  • Suede shorts or skirt- suede is a material that will make you stand out, and you’re sure to wear the item in the future as well as suede can be worn all year round. I love this eye-catching red colour and, again, pockets always come in handy!
  • Monochrome sneakers- are you an all-black or an all-white girl? Take your pick between these amazing sneakers that can seriously be worn anywhere from the office to a party. Keep in mind that if bad weather is forecasted for the day of your festival, you might want to stick to a very old pair of shoes since achieving the perfect festival outfit is not worth ruining these beauties.
  • Fedora hat- Stay cool, protected, and fashionable with this colour block fedora hat. The price is totally reasonable and there are many colour options!
  • Oversized denim jacket- just as comfortable as it is stylish, an oversized vintage Levi-style denim jacket is perfect for a chilly evening once the sun goes down. I highly recommend buying this at a secondhand store near you, otherwise you will often overpay and the quality of the original Levi’s is just unbeatable.

I’ve also thought of some essential non-clothing items that you’ll be glad to have, especially if you’re going to a longer festival. Don’t forget to pack:

  • dry shampoo or taft volume powder (Andrélon sells both)
  • baby wipes
  • a hand-held fan
  • a portable phone charger

All dressed up with nowhere to go? If you’re in the Rotterdam area, don’t miss the Blijdorp Festival taking place on Saturday, August 15th in Roel Langerpark. The lineup will not disappoint any girl who wants to show off her moves, and you’ll be guaranteed a warm welcome and atmosphere.

How to travel in style

Holiday season is almost here and we can’t wait to lay our bum down on the beach. After surviving all of the packing disasters, there’s only one question left: what on earth are we going to wear whilst travelling?

We prefer to put on our sweatpants and fluffy socks, but in 2015 that’s kind of outdated. Your suitcase is filled with the most pretty summer dresses, so why would you not try to look cute on the plane/train/bus? And just in case the pilot turns out to be really handsome, you won’t look like a complete disaster.

The actual problem is, as you might already know, fancy clothing is often not that comfortable. So how do you travel in style but still feel comfy in your outfit? We selected the best travel attire inspiration, so your holiday will be even more perfect.

Bon voyage!

The oversized sweater
The number one travel favourite is probably the oversized sweater. In case you don’t have a boyfriend to borrow one from, there are many stylish items for women too. Wear it with your favourite (skinny) jeans and your new trendy sneakers.

Sportswear
And by sportswear we don’t mean those sweatpants! We’re talking about a combination of your super fashionable tights and some of your favourite wardrobe essentials. Combine your tights and sneakers with a funky bomber or denim jacket for a total different look.

Maxi skirt
The maxi skirt is ideal for late summer nights, but it’s also perfect for traveling. Pick a jersey skirt for the most pleasant experience. Combine it with a leather jacket and slip ons or sneakers for a fashionable outfit without trying to hard.

The boyfriend jeans

This item is truly indispensable. Not only for traveling but also as a basic in your closet. The combinations are endless, the boyfriend jeans suit almost any outfit. So pick your favourite sweater and shoes, and you are ready for take off! If you don’t want to look shabby, wear a blouse under your sweater.

Knitwear

Long live knitwear! A knitted jumper of cardigan is perfect for almost any occasion, including traveling. Make sure you wear layers, because knitwear can get pretty hot (or is it the pilot again?) and you might want to take something off during your trip.
